AFRIKAANS PERCUSSIE / AFRIKAANS TROMMELEN

Roy was already inspired to play music since his early childhood and explored music in his artistic family. At the age of 8 he started to play West-African Djembe music with the guidance of Ponda O’bryan. From that time on his musical career started and he began to do his first performances with the company of his father, Visual Sound Art.
The djembe became his main instrument and study for his entire childhood at Wulabakan international School of African Arts. He followed Djembe masterclasses in Senegal, France and Holland by Fadouba Oulare, Sega Sidibe, Mansa Camio, Ibro Konate and Karamo Daman. From his 18th onwards he began to study other percussion instruments like Conga’s, Bongo’s, Cajon, Sabar and Framedrum. Inspired by the sound of his Framedrum he started to sing. Besides this he studied Balinese Gamelan music with Renadi Santoso and other gamelan masters. To enrich his musical skills Roy studied Anthropology at the University of Amsterdam and world music for children at Aslan Muziekcentrum.
In this way Roy developed his own style as an all-round percussion player and vocalist. He played with different bands, theatre companies and DJ’s : Wulabakan international School of African Arts, Visual Sound Art, Rinus Groeneveld, Fra Fra Sound, Close Act Theatre, Companie Doedel, Teatro Pavana, DJ 100% Isis, DJ Egbert Jan Weeber, DJ Kareem Raihani and many more. Roy has performed worldwide, for instance in Holland, Belgium, France, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Scotland, Austria, Italy, Spain, Syria, Senegal, India, China and South Korea.
